Distinguish cleaning, conversion treatment, passivation and protective chemicals, then select by substrate, contamination and downstream process.
What are metal surface treatment agents?
Metal surface treatment agents are chemicals used for cleaning, conversion treatment, passivation and protection of metals. Selection depends on the substrate, contamination, available equipment and downstream coating or assembly requirements. A product category alone does not establish suitability.
Common categories by process stage
Cleaners and degreasers remove oils and prepare a clean surface for subsequent operations. The alkaline degreaser page on the original Qingyuan website explains that individual products are matched to contamination, substrate and operating requirements. Acidic cleaners mainly address oxides, welding oxides and rust; metal compatibility must be checked before use.
Conversion treatment products include phosphating agents and silane/ceramic treatment agents. They create a treatment layer on a cleaned metal surface for subsequent coating. Phosphating and silane/ceramic treatment are different systems: bath management, rinsing and coating compatibility must be confirmed against the relevant product documentation.
Passivation agents and rust preventives address substrate-specific corrosion treatment and protection during handling or storage. Passivation systems must distinguish stainless steel, aluminium, magnesium and other substrates. The need for protection after derusting, the required protection period and acceptable residues must be assessed separately.
Chemicals versus treatment methods
Mechanical grinding, blasting and electroplating are surface treatment methods, not categories of chemical treatment agents. Cleaning, conversion treatment and subsequent coating are also separate operations. The effect of one operation must not be presented as the performance of the complete process.
Selection and validation
Provide the substrate, contaminants, treatment method, available temperature, downstream requirements and component photographs. Technical staff can then identify candidate products and establish concentration, temperature, treatment time and acceptance criteria using the model-specific TDS, SDS and component trials. Corrosion performance, temperature range, environmental requirements and safety precautions differ by product; no universal claim applies across all categories.
This article was revised using the product categories and alkaline degreaser and silane/ceramic product descriptions on the original Qingyuan website. It provides selection guidance and does not replace model-specific technical documents.
Revised on 6 November 2026 using original Qingyuan product documentation. Confirm processing conditions against model-specific TDS, SDS and trials.
